The 4th Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy Inc. (ASCA) Conference, held on 24th October 2025 at Perth Children’s Hospital, was a resounding success, bringing together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, advocates, patients, carers, and community members from across Australia for a meaningful day of learning, collaboration, and advocacy.

Proudly co-hosted in partnership with the Haematology Team at Perth Children’s Hospital, this year’s conference was thoughtfully developed with input from haematologists across the country who are committed to improving care and support for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

Centred on the theme, “Managing Chronic Pain and Mental Wellbeing for Warriors and Caregivers,” the conference emphasised the importance of a holistic, patient-centred approach to sickle cell care. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in insightful discussions on chronic pain management, mental wellbeing, lived experiences, advocacy, and emerging developments in treatment and research.

ASCA was honoured to welcome Hon Matthew Swinbourn and Hon Ayor Makur Chuot MLC as Guests of Honour representing the Western Australian Government. Their presence reflected the growing recognition of the importance of sickle cell advocacy, health equity, and culturally responsive healthcare in Australia.

The conference featured an exceptional lineup of clinicians and healthcare professionals from across the nation, each contributing valuable expertise and perspectives on the ongoing challenges and opportunities within sickle cell care. Presentations ranged from innovative research and advances in healthcare delivery to deeply personal lived experiences that highlighted the strength of community, resilience, and the continuing need for advocacy.

Beyond the educational sessions, the conference fostered a strong sense of connection, solidarity, and shared purpose among healthcare professionals, patients, carers, and advocates alike. It served as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities and healthcare leaders unite to raise awareness and improve outcomes for people living with sickle cell disease.
