On 5 April 2025, Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy Inc. (ASCA) hosted a special International Women’s Day celebration at Rydges Parramatta, proudly sponsored by Liverpool City Council. The event highlighted the achievements of women in healthcare and advocacy while spotlighting critical issues affecting individuals and families impacted by sickle cell disease in Australia.
A major focus of the day was the implementation of newborn screening for sickle cell disease across Australia, particularly progress in New South Wales. Delegates discussed the importance of early detection to improve outcomes, reduce complications, and provide timely support to families.
The event successfully raised awareness about the urgent need for newborn screening and celebrated the role of women leading change in healthcare. It strengthened ASCA’s partnerships with policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the community, reinforcing the call for a coordinated national screening program for sickle cell disease.
